Disposable Tableware: How to Choose Degradable Disposable Tableware for Restaurants?

In the back kitchen of a restaurant, samples of disposable tableware pile up half the shelf — meeting environmental policies, withstanding hot soup and oil, and controlling costs are almost the common dilemmas for every catering practitioner when purchasing. With the upgrading of the "plastic ban" and the awakening of consumers' environmental awareness, degradable disposable tableware is no longer an "option" but a "must-have". However, there are a variety of materials and dazzling parameters on the market. How to choose without stepping on pitfalls?
Let's talk about materials first. Many restaurant owners are easily confused by the "degradable" label. Currently, the mainstream materials for degradable disposable tableware are corn starch-based, PLA (polylactic acid), and pulp molding. Corn starch-based tableware feels warm and is suitable for cold food or warm dishes. The improved version launched by Mingmeng in recent years has upgraded moisture resistance, so it won't leak easily even when holding noodles with soup; PLA material has stronger heat resistance, can withstand high temperatures of about 100℃, and is suitable for holding hot soup and hot pot soup bases. However, it should be noted that microwave heating should be avoided, otherwise it will deform easily; pulp molding is suitable for packing fried food, with good oil absorption performance and can reduce food adhesion.
Practicality cannot be ignored. Imagine that when a customer opens the takeaway, the disposable tableware has been softened by the soup, or the fork breaks suddenly when picking up food — the experience instantly turns negative. When purchasing, you might as well do a small test: pour boiling bone soup into the tableware, let it stand for 5 minutes, and see if it deforms or leaks; repeatedly pierce blocky food with a fork to check if the hardness meets the standard. Mingmeng simulates high-frequency restaurant use scenarios during production and conducts multiple rounds of tests on the load-bearing capacity and heat resistance of tableware. This is actually worth learning from many peers — after all, environmental protection should not come at the cost of practicality.
Compliance is the bottom line. The latest environmental protection standards in 2025 clearly require that the biodegradation rate of degradable disposable tableware should be ≥90%, and the heavy metal content should not exceed the standard. When purchasing, you must ask the supplier to provide a third-party test report, focusing on three indicators: degradation rate, heavy metals, and volatile organic compounds. Some small manufacturers mix non-degradable components into the materials to reduce costs. Although the price is cheap, they will face fines if inspected by the regulatory authorities, which is more than worth the loss.
Many people will ask: is the cost of degradable disposable tableware much higher than that of ordinary plastic? Actually, it's not. Taking Mingmeng's customized service as an example, when purchasing in bulk, the unit price of corn starch-based tableware is only 0.1-0.3 yuan higher than that of ordinary plastic, and the price difference of PLA materials will gradually narrow with the increase of purchase volume. More importantly, using environmentally friendly tableware can enhance the restaurant's brand image. Now many consumers are willing to pay for "sustainable consumption" and even take the initiative to choose environmentally friendly restaurants. This invisible benefit is more valuable than short-term cost savings.
How to choose for different scenarios? Here is a simple reference table that may help you make quick decisions:
Material Type Application Scenarios 2025 Tested Degradation Cycle Cost-Effectiveness Rating
Corn Starch-Based Cold food, warm dishes, snacks 6-8 months ★★★★☆
PLA (Polylactic Acid) Hot soup, hot dishes, takeaway packaging 8-12 months ★★★★☆
Pulp Molding Fried food, barbecue, pastries 3-6 months ★★★☆☆
To be honest, the core of choosing degradable disposable tableware is nothing more than finding a balance between environmental protection, practicality and cost. There's no need to blindly pursue the "most advanced" materials — the one suitable for your restaurant is the best. For example, a restaurant focusing on light food salads can use corn starch-based tableware; while a restaurant mainly serving hot pot and hot dishes will be more reliable with PLA materials.
Finally, I want to remind you that environmental protection is never a matter of a single link. From purchasing qualified degradable disposable tableware, guiding customers to correctly classify and dispose of them, to cooperating with compliant recycling agencies, every step is important. But choosing the right tableware is undoubtedly the most critical first step in this environmental protection action — after all, letting customers eat at ease, while reducing the burden on the earth, is the right way for the long-term development of restaurants.
